ONEIROI (2008)
In
Greek mythology, the Oneiroi live on the shores of the ocean and are
between them responsible for the dreams of mortals. The
Oneiroi are the gods Icelus, Morpheus, Phobetor and Phantasos. Of
the four Oneiroi, Morpheus is the most important
Icelus
is responsible for the
personifications of the various types of dreams. He makes the shapes
of humans that appear in dreams.
Morpheus
is
the god of dreams. He lies on a ebony bed in a dim-lit cave, surrounded
by poppy. He appears to humans in their dreams in the shape of a man.
He is responsible for shaping dreams, or giving shape to the beings
which inhabit dreams. He is known from Ovid's Metamorphoses,
plays no part in Greek mythology. His name means "he who forms,
or molds" (from the Greek morphe), and he is the son of
Hypnos, the god of sleep. 'Morphine' is derived from his name.
Phobetor
is responsible for the personifications of the various types of dreams.
In the dreams of humans Phobetor makes various animal shapes appear.
His name means "frightning".
Phantasos
is responsible for the personifications of the various types of dreams. The various lifeless
items one meets in one's dreams are created by him. His name means "apparition".
